During this state of emergency, the Community Police Commission is working hard to fulfill its mission – to champion policing practices centered in justice and equity. As the City of Seattle responds to the Coronavirus pandemic, our work with Community has become even more important.
Our current focus
The CPC will continue to conduct the normal work related to the Consent Decree and Accountability Legislation. In addition, the CPC has been working with city leaders to ensure that the emergency response to the coronavirus is equity and justice driven.
CPC staff and commissioners have begun reaching out to community members and groups to assess their needs and lend support in any way we can. We are committed to working together to ensure those groups have the resources they need to succeed. Further, we are working with local leaders to ensure emergency policies instituted at this time do not lead to, or result in, further disparities.
The CPC is also working on creating resources for the Community about their rights, both statutory and constitutional, such that Community may navigate these difficult times equipped with as much information as possible. We hope to share more information about these resources with you soon.
Engaging with us
The CPC is following public health guidance and working from home. Unfortunately, we have also had to postpone some of our community engagement activities, including the Annual Meeting that was scheduled for April 1. However, we are working as quickly as possible to be accessible as possible. Staff and commissioners can be reached over the phone and by email, and meetings are being conducted via teleconference.
If you’d like to engage with us during this time, please contact our Interim Executive Director, Bessie Scott at Bessie.scott@Seattle.gov.
The CPC Thanks You
While we do not know when this crisis will be over, we do find hope in the strength and resiliency of Community. We thank everyone who has and continues to respond to this emergency and remain committed to working in partnership with you to build our future.
