CPC Co-chair statement on Council’s Letter to Mayor about Consent Decree compliance

The following statement is attributable to the CPC co-chairs, Rev. Harriett Walden, Isaac Ruiz, and Emma Catague. The CPC has not take an official position, as the full commission will not meet until Wednesday.

“The CPC co-chairs applaud Councilmembers Lorena González, Teresa Mosqueda, and Lisa Herbold for standing with community and fighting for the landmark police accountability reforms we’ve spent years working on together.

The CPC, dozens of community groups, and now Seattle’s own City Council have told the Mayor’s office that we won’t go back on the decades of work we’ve done to build a strong police accountability system.

Seattle CPC Co-chair’s statement on City’s request for an extension in Consent Decree case

The following statement is attributable to the CPC Co-chairs Isaac Ruiz, Rev. Harriett Walden, and Emma Catague:

“The Court ordered the City and Department of Justice to work with the Community Police Commission (CPC) and the Monitoring Team to find a way to fix the accountability issues in the police contracts by July 15th.

Five days before the deadline, the City has not yet held any meetings with all of the stakeholders mentioned by the judge present together.

CPC ready to work with city leaders on police accountability, following court Order

Below is the Seattle Community Police Commission’s statement following the release of the Federal Court order today finding the city out of compliance with the Consent Decree when it comes to accountability.

“While the Community Police Commission is still reviewing the Court’s order, we’re ready to work with city leaders to make sure Seattle has a strong police accountability system.

Judge Robart agreed with the CPC’s position and, in doing so, is sending a strong message that the recent police contracts undermine accountability and must be improved.

Over the coming weeks, the CPC looks forward to working with city leaders, the Department of Justice, and the monitoring team to come up with a methodology to assess the present accountability system and how the city can improve it, as the court has ordered.”
